Tide height defines the usable shoreline
A tide is the long-period rise and fall of water driven mainly by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun. For an angler on shore, the useful question is not simply whether the tide is high or low. It is how much water will be present at your particular access point, when that level will occur, and whether the changing water will remove your route back. A high tide can cover beach, rocks, steps, and lower pier approaches that were open earlier, while a low tide can expose uneven ground, pilings, holes, shell, and slippery structure.
Read the predicted high and low water heights alongside their times, rather than using a tide label alone. The vertical difference between a high and low tide is the local tidal range, and it varies greatly by coast and location. A small change at one beach may be a major access change at another. Tide predictions are referenced to a local chart datum, not necessarily to the visible sand, deck, parking area, or a familiar water mark. The moving tide changes current and footing

High surf, dangerous currents, lightning, coastal flooding, and strong winds can make a normally practical tide window unsuitable. Piers and jetties deserve special caution because waves and currents can concentrate near them, surfaces may be wet or obstructed, and falling or entering the water can place a person near pilings, rocks, or fishing line.
Do not rely on a calm-looking gap between breaking waves as proof that water is safe. Rip currents can occur near breaks in sandbars and around structures such as piers and jetties, and longshore current can move people toward hazards. Keep children and pets away from the water edge, maintain a retreat path, and avoid climbing on rocks or closed structures. If someone is in trouble, call for professional help, alert a lifeguard when available, and use a reach-or-throw option from safety rather than entering hazardous water yourself.
A conservative tide plan produces a clear decision
Build the trip in order: select the location, read the tide-height curve and timing, check weather and coastal hazards, review water-level observations if available, and set an arrival and departure time with margin. Plan to leave before your access route becomes limited, not when it has already become difficult. Pack so that a quick retreat is realistic, keep essential items secured, and tell someone where you will be. A tide window is useful only if it fits safe access, manageable waves and current, daylight, and local permission to fish.
Call it a GO when official information is clear, access remains available through your planned window, observed conditions match the plan, and you have a safe exit. Call it a MAYBE when water level, surf, wind, current, or access is uncertain enough that an arrival inspection could change the plan; choose a protected alternative or be ready to leave. Call it a SKIP when warnings, closures, lightning, flooding, hazardous surf or current, or a lost exit route are present. This method will not predict a catch, but it can prevent tide timing from becoming the trip’s biggest risk.
