Spring lake turnover is plain-language shorthand for a period when a lake’s water column can mix from top to bottom because temperature-driven density differences are small. It is not a single calendar event, a guaranteed fishing pattern, or something every lake experiences in the same way. Think of it as a changing condition to confirm with observations, weather and safety information before deciding to go.

Fresh water density drives spring mixing

Fresh water behaves in a useful but slightly unusual way: it is densest near 39°F, or 4°C. In an ice-covered lake, water just below the ice can be close to freezing while denser water near the bottom remains nearer 39°F. After ice-out, sunlight warms the surface and wind moves it around. As that surface water approaches the density of the water below, it can sink, rise and exchange places with deeper water.
