Read a hydrograph as a trend, not a green light: the rising limb means water and often current are increasing, while the falling limb shows recession but not automatic safety. Compare observed direction, rate of change, forecast, weather, access reports, and official warnings before deciding GO, MAYBE, or SKIP.
A hydrograph shows both direction and urgency
A hydrograph plots water conditions through time, commonly as stage, or water level, and sometimes as discharge, the volume of water moving past a point. The rising limb is the upslope leading toward a crest; the falling limb is the downslope after it. For trip planning, direction tells you whether conditions are building or easing, while the steepness of that line helps show how quickly the river is changing.
A steep rise deserves more caution than a gentle rise because the launch, shoreline, crossing, and current picture can change between your last check and arrival. A gentle decline can provide more stable planning time, but it still represents moving water and a changing channel. A rising limb increases the need for conservative current planning

The same stage number is not a complete description of current: stage-to-discharge relations are site-specific, and a river can carry different flow at a similar stage while rising versus falling. Use the trend to increase your margin rather than to estimate a precise current speed.
Plan the route around what can change first. Check whether the access road, ramp, trail, parking area, or usual put-in sits in low ground; identify a higher alternate exit before leaving. Avoid committing to wading crossings, narrow channels, flooded margins, or downstream float segments when water is climbing. If a river forecast continues upward during your intended window, a conservative decision is usually SKIP, or MAYBE only from a clearly safe, legal, dry-bank location.
Moving water carries debris and hides changing hazards
Rising water can mobilize branches, whole logs, loose bank material, and human-made debris that was previously stranded. Debris may collect at bridges, bends, culverts, strainers, and access points, then shift as water rises. Muddy water also makes it harder to see submerged obstacles, drop-offs, damaged pavement, and altered shorelines. A hydrograph cannot show each object, but a rising trend is a useful reason to assume that yesterday’s clear route may no longer be clear.
The falling limb changes the debris problem rather than ending it. Receding water can leave wood, slick sediment, and displaced objects across ramps, paths, and shorelines; it can also expose unstable edges that were undercut during higher flow. Do not use a single public photo or report as proof that conditions are safe. Note its location and time, seek multiple recent observations, and give the greatest weight to what you can see from a safe position on arrival.
A falling limb can improve access without restoring normal conditions
A falling limb means the measured level or flow is declining at that gage, often after a crest. That is useful context for a MAYBE decision because the direction is no longer worsening, but the rate matters. A sharp fall may leave access areas wet, soft, or damaged; a slow fall may keep elevated current and flooded features in place for hours or longer. Confirm whether the line is observed data or a forecast, because the forecast portion can change with new rainfall and upstream conditions.
Compare the current reading with several days of history, not just the peak. Look for whether the river is nearing a familiar, usable range and whether the downward line has begun to flatten. Then inspect practical constraints: open roads, legal access, ramp condition, trail footing, weather still upstream, and an exit that does not require crossing water. A falling graph supports GO only when those checks agree; otherwise choose MAYBE with a short, shore-based visit or SKIP until the area stabilizes.
A repeatable decision process keeps the hydrograph in context
Start by opening the nearest relevant gage and identifying the variable, units, timestamp, observed trend, and forecast trend. Stage is water height at that specific gage, while discharge is an estimate of flow volume; neither should be transferred casually to another reach. Check the rate of rise or fall over the last few readings, then scan upstream rainfall and the official forecast. Channel changes, vegetation, ice, and debris can affect the stage-flow relationship, so avoid treating any one number as a universal safety threshold.
Make the final call shortly before departure and again at the access. GO means the graph is stable or easing, no official warning or closure applies, access is dry and lawful, and the group has a conservative route and exit. MAYBE means uncertainty remains, so reduce commitment and keep clear of moving water. SKIP means rising water, a rapid change, flooding, debris-obstructed access, unsafe footing, closures, or any official warning. Never walk or drive through floodwater or around a barricade; official instructions always outrank a trip plan.
