Gage height is a local water-level reference
Gage height, often called stage, is the water-surface elevation measured relative to a fixed reference at one USGS station. It is commonly displayed in feet, but it is not automatically the depth at a launch, crossing, bank spot, or bend farther away. A reading becomes useful when you compare it with previous readings from that same station and with places you know safely.
Channel shape, tributaries, backwater, tides, dams, and distance from the gage can all change what a given stage means on the water. A number that looks ordinary at one station may correspond to flooded access or fast current at another. Pair the observed graph with rainfall information, the weather forecast, and an available river forecast for the area. An observation reports what has already occurred at that station; a forecast estimates what may occur and can change as new rainfall and river information arrive.
Provisional data deserve extra planning margin
USGS real-time water data are generally provisional until they are reviewed and approved. Telemetry and automated screening make the data valuable for monitoring conditions, yet instrument problems or physical changes at a measurement site can produce values that are later revised. Treat a precise-looking reading as useful evidence, not certainty, especially when it is driving a personal safety decision.
Slow down when a graph has missing data, an unexplained jump, a status note, or a reading that conflicts with recent rain and what you can safely observe from shore. Tidal influence, dams, backwater, ice, debris, and channel changes can complicate a simple level-to-flow interpretation. Choose GO only when conditions are within your own proven comfort range, the trend is stable or improving, no official warning, closure, or restriction conflicts, and you can inspect access without entering hazardous water.
