Choose SKIP when thunderstorms, lightning, hazardous marine conditions, flooding concerns, unsafe visibility, or rapidly increasing wind affect the route. Also skip when reaching shelter requires a long exposed crossing, a wind shift would make the trip home substantially harder, or the group does not have the clothing, flotation, communications, experience, and daylight margin for deteriorating weather. If thunder is heard or lightning is seen, get off the water and seek a substantial enclosed shelter. A dock, open pavilion, tent, or the shoreline beside the water is not a substitute for safe shelter.

Use a simple final check before departure: locate the low-pressure system and occluded front on the forecast map; identify the periods when wind, rain, or thunderstorms are most likely; compare those periods with radar and current observations; then identify the most exposed part of the route. Consider the trip from the perspective of the smallest craft, least experienced person, coldest member of the group, and longest return leg. If the forecast timing is uncertain but the outing remains close to a protected exit, a short MAYBE may be reasonable. If the same uncertainty creates a long or exposed return, it supports SKIP.

An occluded front is a useful weather-awareness signal, not a prediction of whether fish will bite. It tells you that a storm system has brought its fronts together and that the resulting wind, clouds, and precipitation may be variable across time and distance. Recheck official forecasts, advisories, warnings, and local restrictions on the day of the trip, then keep watching the actual sky and water. The safest successful plan is often the one that turns around early, stays near shelter, or waits for a clearer weather window instead of treating a mixed forecast as a commitment.
