King tides and access planning mean treating an unusually high predicted tide as a limit on where you can park, walk, launch, land, and return. Start with the local tide prediction, then allow for weather-driven water, waves, site conditions, and closures. The goal is a conservative GO, MAYBE, or SKIP decision that preserves a safe way back.

King tides shrink the usable access window

A king tide is the common name for a perigean spring tide: a period when the new or full moon aligns with the sun and the moon is relatively close to Earth. Those astronomical forces produce a larger-than-average tidal range, with higher high tides and lower low tides. The timing can be predicted, but the effect on access is highly local. At one site, the high water may only wet the lower edge of a dock; at another, it may reach a parking area, ramp approach, beach trail, boardwalk, marsh edge, or low road. Low-lying places can experience high-tide flooding without a major storm.

Use the predicted high-tide time and height to find the least forgiving part of the trip. Do not limit the check to the spot where you expect to fish. Include the road in, parking, gates, footpaths, ramps, docks, shoreline entry, and the route back to higher ground. A route that is dry on arrival can become narrow, wet, or unavailable later. Plan the whole arrival-to-departure window, including loading and launching time. If your return would fall near high water, set a leave-by time that gets you out before the access corridor becomes questionable.

A tide prediction is a baseline, not the waterline

Tide predictions describe the expected astronomical tide at a particular reference location. They are essential for planning, but they are not a complete forecast of water at your access point. NOAA notes that perigean spring-tide predictions do not include wave runup, and coastal water levels can also reflect wind, storm surge, wave setup, regional ocean conditions, rainfall, and drainage problems. An observation tells you what water was doing at that station and reporting time; it does not promise the same depth or timing at a distant inlet, exposed beach, or shallow backwater. Then review the local coastal forecast, marine forecast, wind forecast, and any coastal flood, surf, or small-craft messages. Forecasts remain uncertain and conditions can change after you leave. When prediction, observation, and forecast all point toward higher water, give the plan more room; when they conflict, treat that uncertainty as a reason to simplify the trip.

Wave setup and runup can overtake a route

On an exposed shore, the visible tide line may understate the access hazard. Breaking waves can create wave setup, a rise in average water level near shore. Individual waves can then run farther up a beach, rocks, a ramp, seawall, or other sloping surface; this is wave runup. Swell commonly arrives in sets, so a calm-looking interval is not proof that the route will stay clear. A protected marina may remain manageable at the same tide stage that makes an ocean beach, jetty, inlet, rocky point, or open boat ramp unsafe. Bottom shape, shoreline angle, wind direction, and exposure all affect the result.

Read wave and wind information for the access route as carefully as for the intended fishing area. Ask whether larger sets could reach the stairs, dock, landing, vehicle turnaround, or the only ground above the beach. Do not move close to surf, wet rocks, bulkheads, or a flooded edge just to judge the conditions. Surfaces may be slick, waves can carry debris, and a retreat route can disappear faster than expected. If waves reach the planned corridor, make launching or landing uncertain, or prevent you from keeping a clear view of the exit, move to a more sheltered access point or choose SKIP. A tide chart alone cannot resolve that exposure.

Build the trip around the return route

Before leaving, trace the outing in sequence: access road, lot, gate, trail, ramp, dock, shoreline entry, landing area, and exit. Identify the lowest, narrowest, or most exposed segment, then estimate when you will use it against the rising tide and predicted high water. Include ordinary delays such as traffic, gear loading, slow walking, helping a companion, reduced visibility, or a launch that takes longer than planned. Park only where you can leave without crossing water, and avoid low spots vulnerable to tide, wave wash, debris, or poor drainage. A vehicle that remains dry is not enough if the only road out is already becoming marginal.

Local access information fills gaps that water data cannot. Check updates from the managing park, harbor, marina, road authority, or local emergency office for closures, construction, gate hours, damaged facilities, recurring flood locations, and public warnings. Reassess from a safe position when you arrive; a forecast is not a substitute for seeing whether your planned route is open and usable. Public observations can help reveal recent conditions, but they are not an assurance that the route remains safe. Posted closures, barricades, evacuation instructions, and directions from on-site staff always outrank the trip plan. Do not go around a barrier because the route worked on an earlier tide cycle.

Make the GO, MAYBE, or SKIP call early

Choose GO only when the predicted high water fits the complete access layout, observed conditions do not show an unresolved concern, official forecasts do not conflict with the plan, and no warning or closure affects the route. You should have a dry, visible exit and enough time to leave before the most exposed part of the tide cycle. Continue watching the shoreline and weather after arrival, because safe conditions at the start do not establish safe conditions at departure. GO is an access decision, not a promise about fishing. If the margin disappears, the correct response is to leave while the route remains plainly usable.

Choose MAYBE when the plan works on paper but a changed wind, larger wave set, uncertain lot condition, or unverified exit could alter the outcome. Reduce exposure by selecting higher ground, a more protected access point, a shorter outing, and a firm leave-by time. Choose SKIP when official coastal flood or surf messages, evacuation direction, closures, flooded roads, or unsafe wave conditions affect any necessary segment. Never walk, swim, or drive into floodwater or around a barricade. Water can hide depth, current, damaged pavement, sharp debris, contamination, and electrical hazards. When king-tide access is uncertain, protecting the exit is the conservative and successful trip decision.

Does a king tide always cause coastal flooding?

No. Perigean spring tides can raise the local flooding risk, especially in low-lying places, but flooding depends on the site and added influences such as wind, waves, storm surge, seasonal water level, rainfall, drainage, and shoreline exposure.
