Strong or persistent onshore wind pushes surface water toward land, where it can pile up along beaches, shorelines, and inside shallow bays. Check the prediction against observations before leaving and again near launch time. A nearby water-level station, when available, shows what the water has actually been doing; forecast products describe what may happen next. Compare the observed level and trend with the predicted tide, then look at wind direction, wind strength, wave conditions, and warnings. An observed rise that is already ahead of the prediction is a reason to tighten your margin rather than assume conditions will settle.

Use the closest relevant forecast zone and observation site, and account for the route between your vehicle and the fishing water. Note low bridges, causeways, boat ramps, marsh roads, jetties, and shoreline paths that become unusable first. Water over a familiar road, ramp, or dock changes footing, hides holes and debris, and can remove a safe exit when wind or tide turns.

A conservative decision turns the forecast into a trip plan

Choose GO only when there are no official coastal, marine, surf, or small-craft hazards affecting your plan; the predicted tide leaves comfortable access and return margin; observed water is near expectation; and wind and waves fit your vessel, shore position, and experience. A GO means conditions appear manageable for a short, flexible outing, not that water will stay unchanged. Keep checking conditions, tell someone your plan, and retain an easy early-exit option.

Choose MAYBE when low pressure is present but the timing, wind shift, water-level trend, surf, or access remains uncertain. Delay departure, select a more protected legal location, shorten the outing, or wait for another observation cycle.
